June 4, 2008 at White Stag Building, Portland, Oregon.

Bachelor of Fine Arts

Offsite launches the University of Oregon's digital arts BFA program in Portland. The exhibition title evokes the possibilities that emerge when moving to a new space. The students' work investigates diverse cultural spaces, including the exploratory space of a sketchbook, the virtual space of 2D character animation, the space of a family gathered around a kitchen table, the literal space of architecture expanding into abstraction, the space in memory of the Oregon coast and a China never visited, and the relational space of developing an online community.

We believe in an integrated approach that synthesizes the values of fine arts with possibilities of new methods and practices offered by technological innovation and broad interdisciplinary engagement. Education in the fine arts and design have always valued practice-centered research, innovative methods of communication, and the importance of experimentation in the dynamic construction of meaning. These traditions of visual research within the arts are at the core our approach and are a remarkable standpoint from which to explore and engage the ever-changing and multifaceted territory of media culture.
